The Most Anticipated Luxury Hotel Openings in California
As a self-proclaimed hotel snob, few things excite me more than a beautiful new hotel opening, except perhaps being one of the first people to check in. Every year, a handful of new hotels earn an immediate place on my travel wish list. Some are intimate boutique properties bringing something entirely new to their destination. Others are long-awaited restorations of legendary resorts or the arrival of luxury hotel brands that have been years in the making.
California has several especially exciting openings on the horizon, ranging from a wine-country retreat in Napa Valley to the return of one of Montecito’s most iconic resorts. A few are expected to welcome their first guests later this year, while others remain a little further down the road.
These are the most anticipated luxury hotel openings in California that I will be watching closely and, hopefully, checking into not long after they open.
Four Seasons Resort The Biltmore Santa Barbara
Expected Re-opening: Late 2026
After remaining closed since March 2020, Four Seasons Resort The Biltmore Santa Barbara is expected to welcome guests back in 2026 following an extensive restoration. Four Seasons has confirmed the reopening year, although the hotel has not announced a specific date or begun publicly taking reservations.
Located near Butterfly Beach in Montecito, The Biltmore first opened in 1927 and has long been one of the most recognizable luxury hotels in Santa Barbara. The resort sits across 22 acres of gardens filled with secluded courtyards, fountains, red-brick pathways, palms and Spanish Colonial-style buildings.
Although this is technically a reopening rather than an entirely new California hotel, its return feels significant. After more than six years behind closed doors, an entire generation of people will have the opportunity to experience the property for the first time.
This is easily the California hotel reopening I am watching most closely. The Biltmore has always represented the romantic, timeless side of coastal California, with beautiful gardens, historic bungalows and a setting that feels closely connected to Montecito.
I am particularly curious to see how much of its original character has been preserved throughout the restoration. Some historic hotels lose part of their charm when they are modernized too aggressively, but The Biltmore’s architecture and gardens are such an essential part of its identity that I am hopeful the renovation will honor what made the resort special in the first place.
The Elene, Napa Valley
Expected Opening: Late 2026
A new boutique hotel is coming to Napa Valley in late 2026, and it may be one of the more under-the-radar California hotel openings on this list.
The Elene will be located on five acres along the Napa Valley Vine Trail, approximately three miles from Yountville and five miles from downtown Napa. Its central location should make it a convenient home base for exploring Napa Valley wineries, restaurants and surrounding wine-country towns.
The resort is expected to include 49 guest rooms and suites, along with vineyard-facing outdoor spaces, pools, a hydrotherapy garden, a fitness studio and bicycles for guests. The property is being designed as a collection of separate structures connected by landscaped gathering areas rather than one large traditional hotel building.
Dining will also be an important part of The Elene experience. Its signature restaurant, Vetra, is being developed with chef Matthew Accarrino and will combine Northern California ingredients with influences from his Italian culinary background. A more casual café is also planned as a welcoming stop for hotel guests, locals and cyclists using the Napa Valley Vine Trail.
I love that The Elene sounds less like a sprawling Napa Valley resort and more like an intimate wine-country retreat. Its smaller size, vineyard setting and emphasis on food, wellness and outdoor living are exactly what I look for when choosing where to stay in Napa.
The location is another advantage. Being positioned between downtown Napa and Yountville offers access to two very different sides of the valley, while the Vine Trail makes it possible to experience more of the surrounding landscape by bicycle.
Appellation Petaluma
Expected Opening: 2028
Following the opening of Appellation Healdsburg, the culinary-focused hotel brand is continuing with plans for a new property in downtown Petaluma.
Appellation Petaluma is planned for the corner of Petaluma Boulevard and B Street, where the city’s historic downtown meets the riverfront. The hotel is expected to include a ground-floor restaurant led by chef and Appellation co-founder Charlie Palmer, along with a rooftop space overlooking the city, river and surrounding Sonoma County hills.
The project’s timeline has shifted considerably. Although Appellation’s website still refers to a 2026 debut, the hotel has undergone a substantial redesign and approval process. The current proposal has been reduced from six stories and 93 rooms to four stories and approximately 56 rooms, with recent estimates placing the potential opening around 2028 or 2029.
Petaluma does not always receive the same attention as Napa, Yountville or Healdsburg, which is part of what makes this hotel so interesting to me.
The city offers a more local side of Northern California wine country, with an attractive downtown, independent restaurants, antique shops, farms, creameries and access to nearby Sonoma County wineries. It feels like the kind of place where you could spend an afternoon walking between cafés and shops before heading into the countryside for a tasting.
A thoughtfully designed luxury hotel could make Petaluma a compelling alternative for people who love California wine country but would prefer to stay somewhere less centered around traditional resort tourism.
Aman Beverly Hills
Expected Opening: 2028
Aman Beverly Hills is still a few years away, but it is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated luxury hotel openings planned for California.
The property will be part of the One Beverly Hills development near Rodeo Drive, at the intersection of Wilshire and Santa Monica boulevards. Plans include a 78-suite Aman hotel, private Aman residences, an Aman Club and expansive botanical gardens.
Kerry Hill Architects, the firm behind several of Aman’s best-known properties, is leading the design. The hotel and residences will draw inspiration from California modernism, with natural materials, spacious terraces and a strong connection between the architecture and surrounding gardens. Aman currently lists the hotel as opening in 2028.
Whenever Aman announces a new property, people pay attention. The brand is known for creating hotels that feel private, calm and almost completely removed from the world around them, even when they are located in the center of a major city.
I will be especially interested to see how that philosophy translates to Beverly Hills. Los Angeles is not a destination generally associated with stillness or seclusion, but the garden setting may allow Aman to create something that feels remarkably separate from the surrounding city.
The limited number of Aman hotels in the United States will only add to the sense of exclusivity. Once it opens, I have a feeling Aman Beverly Hills will quickly become one of the most sought-after luxury hotels in Los Angeles and one of the most difficult reservations to secure.
Which California Hotel Opening Am I Most Excited About?
The Elene has the intimate Napa Valley atmosphere I naturally gravitate toward. Aman Beverly Hills will bring one of the world’s most exclusive luxury hotel brands to the West Coast. Appellation Petaluma could introduce more people to a wonderful part of Sonoma County that is often overlooked.
Still, the reopening of Four Seasons Resort The Biltmore Santa Barbara is the one I find most exciting.
